*CASTING *

Casting
The process of hiring actors to play the characters in a
script, typically done by a casting director, but with some
input from a director, producer, or studio.

Casting Director
AKA: Extras Casting, Casting Assistant, Casting
Associate
The person who auditions and helps to select all of the
speaking role actors in film, television shows or plays.
The CD must possess a vast knowledge of the actor
pool and be able to match a variety of actors with just
the right role. Directors and producers rely on the
Casting Director to assist them with assembling the
perfect cast for their production. Casting Directors are
also responsible for serving as the liaison between the
director, and the actors and their agents. CDs negotiate
the deals with agents once the actors have been cast
and are also responsible for the contracts and SAG of
each actor.

Casting Society of America
AKA: CSA
The Casting Society of America is a professional
organization of Casting Directors working in theatre, film,
and television. The C.S.A. is not a union or a guild,
therefore every Casting Director working in these
mediums is not necessarily a member of this
organization.

Casting

A monologue and sides, seems to be too much for some
actors. But I think you should really work for a role and
not just pop in for 3 to 5 minutes and hope you get the
role. They do call it show business, so show me your
skills, people.

DWES =  Casting

Independent  Casting  Agent  Available

A casting director who has done 150+ hours of TV and many features said
something that BLEW SOME ACTORS MINDS. An actor asked about
"self-promotion." The response from the casting director wasn't intended to be a
big deal, but it made sense.... "No one in this industry really cares about your
career...except for you."  That seemed so simple and she didn't mean it in a harsh
way.

But, it got me wondering...How many actors really see it this way... Sure, we all
know it is a tough business, but... We ALSO have a slew of people trying to help
us, many who are supportive, other encouraging actors, the great people you
meet in workshops who really do help you in your skills, casting directors who
are supportive, your agent or manager who is encouraging, the person taking
your headshot is hopefully helpful!   But when it boils down to it. Honestly??? NO
one really cares about your career or dreams any more than YOU!!!

So, what are you doing to prepare for success? Are you in classes? Practicing
cold reading skills? Does your headshot look great or is it...blah??? Are you in
casting workshops? Are you marketing yourself?

Are you exploring voice over as a way to add to your skill set, credits and bank
balance? Do you regularly work out with other actors, casting directors or
teachers who are honest with you about where you are at and how to improve?

Good Casting

Good casting is vital if films are to resonate with audiences.
Ensuring that the most suitable actors are cast requires
exhaustive knowledge of the available talent combined with the
creative ability to imagine how the right actor can bring a
character to life on screen.  Directors often work with the same
Casting Director on many films, entrusting their taste,
imagination and ability to deliver the best possible casts.

Depending on the style of the film, Directors may be prepared to
take creative risks by using non professional actors; this can
require months of research and auditioning by Casting Directors.
They also play a crucial role in contacting A-List stars and
negotiating deals. Casting Directors work tirelessly to help
Directors to achieve their ideal cast.

Casting agencies range in size from big established companies,
employing a number of Casting Associates, Assistants, Runners
and Receptionists, to small, one or two person operations that
hire in support staff during their busiest periods.  Casting
Associates are highly experienced Casting Assistants who conduct
auditions and help Casting Directors to make their selections,
and negotiate fees for supporting cast.  Casting Assistants'
responsibilities include helping to draw up lists of actors, and
checking their availability.

Those involved in casting need a passion for the craft of
acting, combined with excellent communication, negotiation and
organisational skills.  Casting Assistants must work in this
role for many years before progressing to become Casting
Associates.  Casting Directors need a vast knowledge of a wide
range of actors, and an understanding of their abilities, as
well as a thorough appreciation of changing talent trends within
the film industry.  Acquiring a reputation as a respected
Casting Director takes dedication and commitment, a strong
instinct for acting talent, and many years of hard work.

http://www.caryn.com/acting/monologues.html

What is a monologue?

A monologue is defined as a scene or a portion of a script in which an actor gives a long speech without
interruption by any other character who may also be present in the scene. A monologue will generally serve to
expose a character's inner thoughts, thus providing insight into the nature of that particular character. A
soliloquy differs from a monologue in that it is generally a dramatic monologue that is delivered by a single
actor with no one else onstage; it is therefore, delivered by a character to him or herself, or directly to the
audience rather than directed at another person. The term "inner monologue" refers to the thoughts which are
occurring in a person's head, regardless of what words may be coming out of their mouth at the same time. A
good example of this is when a friend asks you if she looks fat in the dress she's wearing (you think she does)
but you tell her she doesn't look that fat at all, and then if you're a good friend, suggest she change into
something with a different color. Your inner monologue is your train of thought about how to get out of telling
her she looks fat, not hurting her feelings etc, what reason you can manufacture for why she has to change her
clothes etc, while your outer monologue is all about suggesting what clothes she should wear and doesn't
mention your angst or her weight at all. See, in real life, inner monologues often don't get expressed, but they
are always present, because as people we are always thinking. So when practicing your monologue, don't just
think about the words you are speaking, but be sure to think about exactly what it is you AREN'T saying.

Finding the right audition monologue or monologue for an acting class, is almost an art in and of itself.
Monologues for actors should be chosen carefully, and it helps to have a wide range of material to choose
from. For an audition monologue, it is a good idea to stick with a short monologue and a character that is close
to your experience, and for a role you really think you would be cast in. So here are resources to help you find
free monologues-- movie monologues or monologues from plays: classical monologues (including
Shakespeare monologues), or contemporary monologues. There are monologues for men and monologues for
women, dramatic monologues, comedy monologues, female monologues for two women, male monologues
for two men, and teen monologues for young actors and even for kids. Tip for young actors looking for
audition material: Don't just read the monologue or scene read the whole play! Truthfully, I don't even
recommend scouring the Internet for monologues except as a way to find a play or screenplay you are
interested in with a character that is your age and type, because monologues taken out of their context are
basically useless to an actor. You must know the context in which what you are performing takes place and the
only way to do that is to read the whole piece and know how your character fits in with the other characters in
the play, where he or she has come from emotionally before your piece starts, and the specifics of the
emotional journey he or she is on during the course of the play or screenplay. And remember, a funny
monologue goes a long way, because you would be surprised how a humorous monologues can light up a
dead room when performed well.

FEMALE MODELS

A good head shot will get the attention of the casting director.

These images should capture the essence of the actor or model at his or her best, but not
look too posed, polished, and perfected that they detract from seeing the real person.

A relaxed, candid pose is best. Casual, but not too casual clothes in mid tone colors
should be worn to the shoot. Accessories and jewelry should be on the small side.
Nothing should divert attention from the individual.

Six Tips for Perfect Headshots

First, yes you may staple your cover letter to the back of your
headshot, in the upper left hand corner. Be sure the staple does
NOT cover important contact information on your resume.

1. Like the envelope and the letter, the headshot must look
professional. Always 8x10". No fancy fonts here either. Even the
print style you select says something about you. Neither the
border nor the printed name should draw attention away from
your face! The aim of a headshot is to have your face grab their
attention.

2. What should the picture look like? YOU!!! Women: Please do
not try to look like the next Miss America. "Ordinary" is very
much in these days. A pretty woman trying to look glamorous
has fewer chances/fewer roles than a pretty woman who
presents herself as she is: pretty. Or plain. Or intelligent. Or
humorous. Or whatever she is. Teenagers, please look like a
teenager. If they want someone who looks 22 there are
thousands to choose from. The more your headshot looks like
you, the better the headshot.

I would strongly suggest that if some of your roles will be
business types, then men wear a tie and jacket and women wear
a suit and blouse as one pose and tee shirt or more sporty outfit
for the other pose. Whatever you wear, LOOK LIKE YOU. Try as
truthfully as you can to figure out what kinds of roles you are
likely to get cast in. Chances are if you are not a hunk or a
model, you are not going to get hunk/model roles.

3. Make up? Exactly the same that you yourself could apply.
Horrors! I can hear the women screaming. There is only one
exception: If you have very dark circles under your eyes, then
lighten them under careful makeup. Men, unless you are only
the "scruffy, unshaven type" then please shave. LOOK LIKE
YOUR HEADSHOT AND HAVE YOUR HEADSHOT LOOK LIKE
YOU. Unless you are stunning, please do not have your face all
glamored up, unless you are willing to pay a make-up artist
every time you audition.

4. Just be sure the picture is about you, not about hair or boots
or glamorous makeup. What does that mean? I once saw a
headshot of a young woman sitting on the floor wearing boots.
The shot was angled from the bottom of her boots. Those boots,
consequently, were twice the size of her head. That was a
picture about boots. After I first saw the boots, five minutes later
I had forgotten the face, but the image of boots has lingered five
years.

5. NOTHING MUST TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR FACE. That is
what people must see.

6. If you smile, get your whole face, especially the eyes, into the
smile. Otherwise just a "real you" look is best. If you are
self-conscious about your teeth, your smile will show it. No, do
not smile unless you can commit to it completely.

The hardest advice of all: If a headshot is not working (that is, if
you are not getting called in for ANYTHING) heave it out and get
another set of shots. That is why it is so terribly important NOT
to pay a fortune for headshots. You do not have to use the
biggest name photographer. Your headshot is not about the
photographer. It is about your face. And if one picture isn't
working, move ON TO THE NEXT.
